First Make Music, Then Make History
My mother was a music teacher and throughout my life, she provided me with the tools necessary to compete and succeed. Music has been that driving force in my life and my career. From the music room to the Detroit Country Day School to twice-leading my team at the University of Michigan to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, and to being #1 overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft - music has been my foundation. It gave me the passion to transcend everyday obstacles and do what I love.
This past year, I joined Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Gavin DeGraw, Ne-Yo, Johnny Rzeznik, Natasha Bedingfield, The Fray, Tamia, 3 Doors Down and Venus Williams as a member of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation’s Inaugural Class of Ambassadors. I am answering our national call to service by doing my part to ensure music in our schools. For over a decade now, VH1 Save The Music has worked to provide the necessary resources to foster the next generation of music makers and creative minds through music education in our public schools. There are still many communities that cannot provide a complete music education to their students and it is my personal mission to help VH1 Save The Music continue to provide these schools with basic resources necessary for our young people to compete in the 21st century.
